Violent weather sparks tornadoes in US

At least 116 people have been killed in the US state of Missouri as severe tornadoes have destroyed property and left hundreds injured. Much of the city of Joplin has been flattened, leaving power lines down and roads blocked. As a result authorities have declared a state of emergency

It has been reported that some debris had been found 45 miles away as the winds picked up material and hurled it with such power. The path of the tornado stretched for a distance of 6 miles and was half a mile wide. Authorities have warned that the risk is not over, with more tornadoes predicted in the coming days.
