Why so many tornadoes this year?

BBC Weather - Preliminary estimates put the total number of tornadoes in April at more than 600, beating not only the previous April record of 257, but also the all-time monthly record of 542.
Last week there were 344 fatalities in 48 hours, the most people ever killed by tornadoes in a two day period.

The season runs from April to June, and May is usually the most active month, so there may be many more tornadoes still to come.
But why have there been so many in 2011? Jay Wynne explains here.
