For many years, as a result of governance by the military regime Many parts of Myanmar (Burma) have been left largely undeveloped. However, as the country opens up, tourism arrivals increased by 50% after elections in 2010 that saw a largely non-military government.
The government and investors are looking at developing the infrastructure in order to attract more tourists. The government has started that it will protect the very things that attract tourists – such as heritage sites, but develop the country to cater for more arrivals and boost the economy. This will be a delicate juggling act which many destinations have tried and failed at achieving before.
